About Awaken Dance Theater:
Mission:
Awaken Dance Theater aims to make bold statements on social and political issues through dance.
History:
In the fall of 2013, former Ailey student Rebekka Nodhturft set out to create a single piece. After hearing disparaging remarks about interracial couples in the heart of NYC, Nodhturft was fed-up and ready to speak out with passion sparked by her own experience. She created the company’s first piece: “The Race and Relationships Choreography Project.”
Nodhturft started by interviewing people about their experiences and views of interracial relationships. Using this feedback, she created six shorter works that culminated in a showing at the Ailey Studios in January 2014. Soon, she was invited to perform excerpts from “The Race and Relationships Choreography Project” at festivals and showcases around the city.
With renewed inspiration to create works concerning social justice, Nodhturft officially created Awaken Dance Theater in March 2014. Awaken Dance Theater's second major work, “Only in America,” addresses the tragedy of school shootings and the need for increased gun control in the United States. “UNPLUGGED” satirizes society's addiction to technology, while “In His Grip,” illustrates the unspeakable pain of domestic violence and sexual abuse.
Other issues that Awaken Dance Theater would like to explore further include climate change, sustainable development, corruption in government, unsafe and selfish capitalistic practices, health care and education, feminism and reproductive rights, LGBT rights, the rights of the disabled, eating disorders and other psychological disorders.
Awaken Dance Theater is sponsored by Fractured Atlas, which provides artists a platform to create and raise funds easily. Please support us so we can continue this important work. Click here for more information.
