LGBT Issues
Dreamworld
In June of 2016, there was a tragic shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. This hate crime caused a lot of shock across the nation and facilitated a lot of conversations involving gun control and the hate the LGBT community continues to face, despite the strides they've made towards equality, such as gaining the right to marry whoever they choose regardless of gender.
In response to these conversations and this hate crime, Awaken Dance Theater performed a piece called Dreamworld, originally choreographed as part of the Race and Relationship Project, at an event they organized to give local artists a place to express the grief and anger they felt, stand in solidarity with the LGBT community , and begin to heal. This event, which was called the Tribute to Orlando from the NYC Dance Community, was free and open to the public and helped multiple dance companies from all over New York City come together.
Photos and video of Awaken Dance Theater's performance of Dreamworld at the tribute can be found below.

This piece was originally created as the 'closing' of our Race & Relationships Project. However, because hatred and inequality can be seen across races, genders, sexualities, etc, we were able to use it for the Orlando tribute. It was the final dance in our 6-dance sequence. It is supposed to send the message that our world isn't perfect in terms of equality and love, but that at least the dancers and musicians/artist see it as something that is valuable, and want to dream or move towards that as a reality.
There is a video below highlighting the choreographers and artists reactions to the tragic event and how it inspired their tribute.
