Racism and Racial Equality

The Race and Relationships Choreography Project

The first piece that Awaken Dance Theater performed was related to racial equality and how ingrained racism in society can affect interracial romantic relationships. In fall on 2013, Rebekka Nodhturft created the company’s first piece: The Race and Relationships Choreography Project to address the racism she had witnessed.

Nodhturft started by interviewing people about their experiences and views of interracial relationships. Using this feedback, she created six shorter works that culminated in a showing at the Ailey Studios in January 2014. This 45 minute work showcased the ways romantic relationships can be affected by racism. She was invited to perform excerpts from “The Race and Relationships Choreography Project” at festivals and showcases around the city
